In Japan, it is customary to leave one's shoes in an area near the door and to use indoor-only footwear or no footwear at all in the house. I was, however, shocked to learn that there are summer and winter versions of slippers. Evidently, Misa, for the last decade and a half, has never understood why I've continued to use my summer slippers during the winter. For my part, I've never noticed that she switches slippers from season to season.
Not wanting to be the nail that sticks out, I ordered some winter slippers. Of course I took my cue from The Wirecutter and got the Wicked Good Moccasins from LL Bean.
A little heavy for slipper use, but super comfy.
So about 6 or 8 months ago I got a bee in my bonnet about feet and toe spread and decided that we moderns — probably as a result of reading Jared Diamond’s The World Until Yesterday — have f’d up our feet with the little cages we put on them. I also have a few friends (Hi Mark!) that have recurring low back issues and I think part of the problem starts from what’s happening below the knee for many of us. Problems at the ground translate to problems with ankles, knees, hips, and lower backs. The posterior chain can be an engine of power, but can also be the weakest link. I bought some toe spacers to try to spread my toes out to what would’ve been their natural alignment. I also bought some LEMS boat shoes that accommodate said spacers. Also last Spring I ordered some flat-bottomed “dress shoes” from Carets (formerly the Primal Professional). After a number of delays related to quality assurance, I got the shoes aa few days ago. They’re made to look as if there’s a heel, but they actually have zero rise. The other important feature is that the sole is flexible, so one’s foot can flex naturally.
How fucking much were those, bro? Look wicked expensive, kid -
